In the Net

Year 4 had a super afternoon at Stow-on-the-Wold Primary School watching an interactive play, ‘In the Net’, presented by the Alter Ego Company. The play told the story of Dotty, a 7 year old girl, who got a new iPad for her birthday. She spent the day online making a new best friend called Jenny, posting information and pictures about herself, exploring websites and being unkind to a girl called Ava on ‘FriendsFace’.

Suddenly, Dotty was sucked into the internet where she met Icon, who told her that she wasn’t being safe or very nice to people online. Virus and Spam, who also lived in the internet, found out all about Dotty from everything she posted online and tried to find her by following her digital footprint.

Dotty then met Password, the gatekeeper to the super information highway. He asked Dotty two important questions: ‘How do you think Ava felt when you posted those horrible things about her online?’ and ‘Have you ever bullied anyone in the playground?’. Dotty learned an important lesson – when you are on the internet you should treat people the same as you do in real life. Never bully anyone online. If anyone bullies you online, tell someone, an adult or a teacher.

Finally, Dotty met Uh-oh, who explained that he is the feeling you get when you get when you go on a website that makes you feel scared/upset/worried. Dotty learned that if this happens, close the lid and get an adult.

To return home Dotty had to answer these 7 questions:

  1. Is it true/false that bullying online is not as bad as bullying someone in real life?
  2. What should children do if they are being bullied online?
  3. Why is it important to keep your personal information safe online?
  4. What should you every do if you get that uh-oh feeling when online?
  5. Why is it important to get permission and tell a grownup what websites you are going on online?
  6. Why is it important to be careful when chatting to someone you have only met online?
  7. What should children do if they have any concerns or questions about today?

We are very pleased to say that Dotty answered all the questions correctly and returned home!

Year 4 thoroughly enjoyed this play and learned so much about keeping themselves safe online.
