British Science Week Maple

We had great fun this week celebrating British Science Week. The theme this year was 'Curiosity - What's your question?'. 

We started by thinking about questions we have. Here are a small selection to show some of the things we are curious about:

• Why do we have ears?
• How do spiders make their webs?
• Is there life on other planets?
• Why is the sky blue?
• What is the most dangerous plant on earth? 
• Why do kangaroos have pouches and we don't? 
• How old is Earth?
• Why do some people have freckles? 
• What is sand made from? 
• How many stars are there? 
• Why are pineapples spikey?
• How many stars are there?
• What is hair for?

As a class we looked at this question: DOES TOAST ALWAYS LAND BUTTERSIDE DOWN? Murphy’s Law says falling toast always lands butter-side down, but is this true?

We decided in our groups how to investigate this and how to record our results. We then looked at our results to find out if they proved or disproved Murphy's Law.

• What if there is jam on the toast? Marmalade? Marmite? Nutella?
• What if we drop the toast from different heights?
• What if we cut the toast in half? 
• What if the toast is cut into triangles? 
• What if we only butter half of the slice of toast?
